Carnival in Andorra: tradition, culture and unique experiences

Come and experience a different kind of carnival, with the charm of the high mountains and a host of activities for all tastes.

Carnival in Andorra is much more than snow and skiing. It is an explosion of colour, music and tradition that fills the streets with joy and transforms the country into a festive setting where customs mix with entertainment. If you are looking for a destination to experience a different Carnival, with the charm of the high mountains and a host of activities for all tastes, Andorra is the perfect choice.

How to experience Carnival in Andorra

Unlike other places, Carnival in Andorra has a special flair: its celebrations combine traditional events with modern shows. Some of the highlights include:

Carnival parades and rúas:

The streets are filled with troupes, floats and creative costumes in a parade full of music and visual spectacle. The largest parade is the one between Escaldes-Engordany and Andorra la Vella, although other towns, such as nearby Canillo, also have their own parades. On the end of the parades there are costume contests.

The Carnestoltes trial

One of the most curious traditions, where the king Carnestoltes (Carnival in Catalan) is judged and condemned in a festive act.

The Ball de l'Ossa:

Declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. It is a performance, with medieval roots, which is held in Encamp and recreates scenes of traditional rural life. The story follows a group of peasants who, while working and singing, are interrupted by a wild bear that sows chaos until it is killed by hunters.

Unlike other places, Carnival in Andorra has a special air: its celebrations combine traditional events with modern spectacles.

A journey of high mountain flavours

This is a good time to savour authentic Andorran food. Here are some typical dishes not to be missed:

  • Escudella and carn d'olla: a hearty stew perfect for cold days.
  • Trinxat de montaña (mountain trinxat): made with cabbage, potatoes and bacon, ideal for recharging your batteries.
  • Cured meats and artisan cheeses: local products that reflect the country's livestock farming tradition.
  • Dinners in traditional bordas: restaurants located in old shepherds' houses where you can enjoy grilled meats.

But there is no doubt that every festival has its own typical dishes, and Carnival in Andorra is no exception. Some of the delicacies you can't miss include:

  • Coca masegada: a traditional Carnival sweet with a crunchy touch and irresistible flavour.
  • Botifarra de huevo: a special sausage eaten at this time of year and part of Catalan and Andorran cuisine.
  • Calçotadas: from the end of January to mid-March is the season for this typical dish, cooked on the grill with its characteristic sauce. If you have not yet tried the typical ‘calçots’, now is the time to do so.

Fun in the snow

Although Carnival is the main event, many people combine the party with fun in the snow. It is traditional for some skiers to dress up in their snow gear, filling the slopes with colour and fun.
Andorra also offers a wide range of winter activities for those who want to enjoy the snow in different ways:

  • Snowshoeing: discover breathtaking landscapes walking on snowy trails.
  • Mushing or dog sledding: experience the magic of the mountains with a dog sled ride.
  • Snowmobile: for adrenaline junkies, snowmobiling is an unforgettable experience.
  • Naturland: an adventure park where you can try Nordic skiing, Tobotronc and other experiences in the heart of nature.
